Il tour del 1974 di Bob Dylan segnò il suo ritorno dal vivo dopo otto anni e lo riunì con The Band, diventati nel frattempo celebri a pieno titolo. Bob Dylan e The Band suonarono 30 date in 42 giorni, spesso con due spettacoli al giorno, stabilendo un nuovo standard per i concerti rock davanti a una media di 18.500 spettatori. L’energia delle performance fu descritta da Ben Fong-Torres di Rolling Stone come “incandescente e travolgente”, mentre Robert Christgau affermò che Dylan “passava sopra le sue vecchie canzoni come un camion”.
Il Tour ’74 iniziò il 3 gennaio 1974 al Chicago Stadium con una versione tesa e combattiva di “Hero Blues”, una rara traccia acustica diventata elettrica delle sessioni di “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan”, eseguita pochissime volte da Dylan. Altre rarità, come una “Ballad Of Hollis Brown” completamente reinventata, “Song to Woody” (non eseguita dal 1962) e l’outtake di Planet Waves “Nobody ‘Cept You”, furono ben accolte nelle prime serate del tour. Robbie Robertson de i The Band ricordava che, durante la loro precedente tournée insieme, erano stati fischiati su ogni palco in Europa, e che ciò che era accaduto quella sera a Chicago era molto rassicurante per loro.
La ricezione non era l’unica cosa cambiata dall’ultima volta che Bob Dylan e i The Band avevano fatto un tour insieme nel 1966. Da allora, The Band aveva pubblicato sei LP, partecipato a Woodstock e altri famosi palchi, e registrato una serie di sessioni storiche con Bob Dylan da “The Basement Tapes” a “Planet Waves”. Da parte sua, Bob Dylan si era praticamente ritirato dalle scene dopo un incidente in moto nel 1966, ma era ancora “ampiamente considerato come la star più influente e significativa degli ultimi 10 anni della musica popolare americana,” secondo il New York Times.
Il tour contribuì a creare il modello per i grandi tour rock, codificando esperienze condivise come il pubblico che alza accendini e il lampo delle luci durante momenti salienti come “Like A Rolling Stone”. Molte canzoni, tra cui “All Along The Watchtower” e “Forever Young” e “Most Likely You Go Your Way (and I’ll Go Mine)” furono eseguite dal vivo per la prima volta e divennero iconiche. Fu inizialmente registrato con un mix stereo da soundboard su nastro da 1/4” e su cassetta.
